Two Types of Matter
(Definition)
Mixture
A mixture is the physical combination of two or more substances in which the identities are retained and are mixed in the form of solutions, suspensions and colloids.
Homogeneous Mixture
It is a mixture in which the composition
is uniform throughout the mixture
Solution
It is a homogeneous mixture of one
or more solutes dissolved in a solvent.
Types of Solution
Saturated Solution
a solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that is capable of dissolving.
Super Saturated Solution
contain more dissolved solute than saturated solutions and dissolves more solute than the solution has the capacity to at a given temperature.
Unsaturated Solution
contains less solute than the solution is capable of dissolving.
Components of Solution
Solute
The substance that dissolves in a solvent
Solvent
the substance in which a solute dissolves
Heterogeneous Mixture
It is a mixture in which the composition is
not uniform throughout the mixture.
Colloid
is a mixture in which one substance consisting of
microscopically dispersed insoluble particles is suspended throughout another substance.
Suspension
a heterogeneous mixture in which the solid particles are spread throughout the liquid without dissolving in it
Pure Substances
A substance that has a fixed chemical composition throughout is called a pure substance
such as water, air, and nitrogen. A pure substance is a single kind of matter that cannot be separated into other kinds of matter by any physical means.
Compounds
a compound is a substance made up of two or more different chemical elements combined in a fixed ratio.
Elements
An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler format.

4 States of Matter
Liquid
a substance that flows freely but is of constant volume, having a consistency like that of water or oil.
Solid
having, involving, or dealing with three dimensions or with solids, firm and stable in shape.
Gas
A state of matter that has no fixed shape and fixed volume
Plasma
a form of matter in which many of the electrons wander around freely among the nuclei of the atoms. Plasma has been called the fourth state matter.
