Epidemiology, evolution, and cross-disciplinary perspectives
Citation: Sun J et al. 2020. OVID-19: Epidemiology, evolution, and cross-disciplinary perspectives. Trends in molecular medicine.
Facts about COVID:
- Virus full name - severe acute respiratory acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoVid).
- The virus likely jumped to other animals before becoming transmissible to humans.
- First appeared in December 2019 in Wuhan City, China.
- 7th known strain of virus from the Corona family to infect humans.
- Major physical symptoms similar to the flu. (Cough, muscle soreness, dyspnea, and fever)
- No material evidence of vertical transmission from mother to infant.
- Series of animal transmissions that made virus pathogenic to humans unknown.
- Evidence suggests the pangolin supplied the genetic material necessary for the virus to infect humans.

Potential Solutions:
- The researchers invest a significant portion of the article describing the mechanism used by the virus to invade the new host. By understanding how the virus gets into our cells we may be able to find a way to block its entry.
- The virus uses a spike protein, a sugar located on our cell membranes, and a host receptor enzyme called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2).
- No antiviral drugs have been approved for treatment use thus far.
- The vaccines while useful for helping to supply more antibodies it still can't fulfill the demand needed to stop the virus.
- The researchers suggest a structure similar to the world health organization but for animals.
