Secondary sources: Information is obtained “second hand”, someone else may have already interpreted the data. Accuracy will need to be checked.

symbolic codes
(generally used for an action, setting, what happens in a scene). Environment/Scene setting:, Actor’s body language/facial expressions, Colour, Mise-en-scene, Musical genre, pace, tempo, how instruments are played
written codes
(cover use of language, how it is written, printed or spoken) Text based, Storytelling, Narrative/dialogue, Communication
technical codes
Audio recording techniques such as microphone type and positioning. Audio editing techniques, Camera techniques, Lighting techniques, Video editing techniques, Navigation techniques, Animation ,Games .
Audience demographics & segmentation
income
Influence how the audience will live their life, can impact on product and product elements.
interests
Musical tastes, hobbies and pastimes.
education
Education level, this will affect the content of your product.
lifestyle
Product will appeal to different people, healthy lifestyle, rural or inner city living.
occupation
Types of jobs that the audience may have.
Demographics: Study of target audience characteristics
location
Product linked to a local attraction, e.g. coastal, rural, inner city.
Segmentation: Splitting target audience into different categories
gender
Male/female, but also consider other categories of gender e.g non binary, transgender
Stereotypes: An assumption made about people who are part of a particular group.
age
Normally split into age range, 11-16, 20-30.

Similar to educate but media which informs can also be used to give instructions or information too, e.g. leaflets, maps.

Media is used to teach skills or new knowledge, e.g. an animation showing how to carry out a task.

Media can be used to influence people, such as encouraging people to follow a certain movement, or point of view, e.g. campaign posters, videos of interviews.
advertise/promote
Used to sell a product or service to viewers, readers or listeners. Advertising banners on websites are one example of using media to advertise.
