McKinley ordered Spain to stop the violence in Cuba. Cuba insisted on independence that Spain would not give them.
McKinley sent USS Maine to Cuba to prevent conflicts, it was blown up killing 350 people
Teller Amendment stated US did not intend to free Cuba, they sent ships to cause Spain to declare war.
