The Linnaean system of classification consists of a hierarchy of groupings, called taxa (singular, taxon). It consists of organisms that share just a few basic similarities.
Today in the Linnaean classification the precise name and number of domains have been updated by evolutionary biology and molecular science, but the taxa still stand. The names from the major taxa from largest to smallest are, domain, kingdom, phylum, or division, class, order, family, genus and species.
