William Howard Taft (1909-1912)
became govoner of philippines in 1901
He began several policies to improve the situation of the Filipinos. He extended limited self rule, with the Philippine Assembly convening in Manila in 1907. He also ordered the construction of roads, bridges, and schools. he established a public health system to care for Filipinos.
dollar diplomacy
This policy looked to increase American investments in businesses and banks throughout Central America and the Caribbean Sea. He wanted to grow economically without having to use the military.
Woodrow Wilson (1913-1920)
revolution in Mexico
Mexico was starting a revolution within their own country. Wilson favored Venustiano Carranza since he was following moral diplomacy. He sent Marines down to occupy the Mexican Port of Veracruz.
In 1917, Wilson withdrew his troops since he was worried about World War I. After this, America declared war on Germany and became part of the World War I.

He didn't want to gain any more territory, but instead gain human rights, national integrity, and opportunity.

Spain continued to have conflicts with Cuba. Spain also sunk the USS Maine which led to war between America and Spain. the US won and gained control over Cuba, Guam, and Puerto Rico which was from the Treaty of Paris. They also bought Philippines from Spain for $20 million which was part of the Treaty of Paris.
The Filipino's didn't cooperate with the American forces which led to guerrilla warfare and killed many Americans.

Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1908)
big stick diplomacy
wanted to create a passage from the Caribbean Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through Central America. They bought Panama for $40 million which enabled them to gain access to trading with new territories.
Anti asian sentiment caused disputes with Japan. Roosevelt went against this with the "gentlemen policy" to try and end segregation. Japan limited their emigration of citizens to the US.
