Bone Tissue - Coggle Diagram
Bone Tissue
Osteoid: Collagen matrix that is mineralized to form bone
Bone
Compact bone
makes up
Long bone
Epiphysis: End of long bone
Periosteum: Connective tissue and blood vessels that surrounds bone
Osteoblasts: Immature cells that build bone by secreting osteoid, as they get trapped they differentiate into osteocytes, found in periosteum
Appositional growth: Widing growth, osteoblasts in periosteum secrete osteoid to make/widen the bone
Intermembranous ossification: Bone building from embryonic connective tissue using osteoblasts that secrete osteoid
Osteogenic cells: Precursor stem cells that turn into osteoblasts, found in periosteum
Epiphyseal plate: Actively dividing Hyaline cartilage in growing, elongating bones
Interstitial growth: Lengthening bone, chondroblasts divide and lengthen tissue, and then differentiate into osteoblasts to ossify the tissue
Endochondral ossification: Bone building from hyaline cartilage using chondroblasts that differentiate into osteoblasts
Red marrow: In proximal epiphysis, produces red and white blood cells
Hematopoiesis: Production of red+white blood cells
Epiphyseal line: Closed growth plate in mature bones
Diaphysis: Shaft of long bone
Medullary cavity: Cavity within diaphysis that contains bone marrow
Endosteum: Connective tissue that lines the medullary cavity
Osteoclasts: Multinucleated cells that secrete acid and enzymes to dissolve bone, found in endosteum
Yellow marrow: Fat within medullary cavity
Osteon: Unit of compact bone made up of central canal and lamellae
Osteocytes: Mature bone cells, embedded in compact bone, within lamellae
Canaliculi: Mini canals, osteocytes make contact with neighboring osteocytes within canaliculi
Central canal: Canal within osteons that conducts blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels
Surrounded by
Concentric lamellae: rings of bony tissue surrounding the central canal
Connected to other central canals by
Perforating canal: Carry blood vessels from the periosteum into the bone and connect central canals of adjacent osteons
Interstitial lamellae: Between osteons made from remodeled concentric lamellae
Circumferential lamellae: Ring of bony tissue circling the entire bone (compact bone)
Spongy bone
Hydroxyapatite: Calcium and phosphorus salts that help align collagen fibers to enhance hardness of bone
