microscopic animals inhabit the water spaces between
sand particles.
-bacteria break down organic particles to release nutrients, especially in well-aerated sand.
-Faeces and wastes of the protists and worms are broken down further by the bacteria and the released nutrients flow through the sand back into the sea to become food for phytoplankton.
