Overall Witi Ihimaera makes the reader feel inspired and light-hearted. Because of how serious and formal this moment and specific piece of writing is, Witi purposely uses intense and intricate language in the use of dialogue to present that.
This is mainly seen through the use of dialogue. In this moment, Tama's family member is talking to him about what his duties are, who he is, where he has come from and the purpose of what he is to become.
Even words in Māori have an effect on mood and tone. It's as if you can feel the culture, the mana (extraordinary power, essence), presence when reading the text.
An awaited moment, for all those in the family and community.
Use of Dialogue:
The vocabulary in this moment if very formal. Words such as
"...your lineage is long and renowned."
This adds emotion into the moment. You can feel some type of achievement or accomplishment of Tama.
"It is a proud name and your people are proud people."
This part speaks loudly of his family and the line he comes from. This speaks highly of the mana in his family. Tama was doing for his father and those who came before him as such as his grandfather.
"...you are Tama Mahana, elsest son of Rongo Mahana who was the son of Eruera Mahana."
Parts of dialogue such as,
"Proclaim that Rongopai is your family hearth, your birthright, and that you are pleased to stand before your whare tupuna."
show the events that are yet to take place, and build suspense towards it.
In this moment where Tama's family member as such is talking to him about an important duty he has ahead of him. You can feel this is a highlight because there is some sort of special relationship between the two. The way he talks to Tama, you can tell it means alot to both of them.
