Future For The Gealtacht
(4 Marker) The 2016 census tells us there are only 73,800 daily Irish speakers outside of the education system, only 20,500 of these people live in the Gaeltacht region, this is not promising for the future of Irish.
Total population of Gaeltacht region in 2016 was 96,000 with only 66,000 being able to speak Irish & only 25,500 of these people speaking it on a daily basis.
A study done by the educational council for Gaeltacht & Irish school stated that in in 20 years time there will be a shortage of Irish teachers, this was stated in 2005.
People believe that the future of the Gaeltacht was in the Gaeltacht quarter of Belfast, due to their strong link with cultural identity.
Irish in the Gaeltacht quarter of Belfast is heavily promoted due to there being many Irish primary school, secondary schools, crêches & an Irish radio station.
St. Mary's University on the Falls Road, Belfast is the only teaching collage with a dedicated Irish medium Unit.
