The Myth of Globalization
Cultural Differences
No matter where we go, we will always encounter things different from what we are used to or expect.
We all communicate in different ways.
Knowing how to speak a language does not mean that you understand the language.
We are all very different.
Directness does not necessarily mean rudeness.
Displays of emotions do not necessarily mean that a deal is going good or bad.
Time is viewed differently.
Some cultures view it as a guideline.
Some cultures view it as strict.
From a cultural perspective, we are not global.
Global Village
There is no single village and there probably never will be.
Village life and culture rule no matter how much we think we are globalized.
We need to stop believing that everything and everyone should be the same and start understanding each other.
The dominance of the English language and the reliance of digital communication led to a cross cultural dilemma.
We think this means that we can understand each other, but that is not the case.
There are still many misunderstandings because cultures use languages differently and might not understand all of the new words and usages that come up.
Plus, people interpret things subjectively and tend to jump to conclusions.
We view the world differently from each other and often forget to think about how the other person is seeing things.
We stereotype.
We think and react quickly. This does not give time to properly understand or analyze the situation.
Each culture has a different perspective, and we must learn to remember that our village does not represent the world. So, it is of vital importance that we should learn about the culture of others. This is not only important for business. It is important for the entire world because it can allow us all to better understand each other and to communicate.
Communication
Do we truly talk enough with each other?
If we do not communicate well, things often get taken in the wrong way.
Communication is mostly done electronically. This leaves a lot of room for errors because others might not understand the context, tone, culture, etc.
We must always keep in mind the individual and the culture they are from when we communicate with them.
Our context is not the same as another person's.
Instead of truly communicating, we tend to only have contact with others.
If we do not understand them and they do not understand us, then we cannot truly communicate.
Talking with someone is not the same as messaging with them.
Culture Shock
This used to be a feeling of disorientation from going to and experiencing a new culture.
It has now become an invisible factor in our lives because it is hidden behind our technology.
We do not learn from it anymore because we do not experience it in a face-to-face setting.
This has led to the need to make a new form of communicating. We need to find a way to truly understand our differences.
Cultural Intelligence
To truly understand each other and be able to communicate, we must understand other cultures.
We need to learn to adapt so that we can improve.
We do not need to take away or lose our own cultural identity. Instead, we need to realize that we do not all think, act, interpret, and reason the same way.
We also need to learn how to understand our own culture within the parameters of other cultures.
This is one of the key ways to learn how to navigate in our current world.
