Often paired with Gou Teng. Gou Teng is bitter and cold and drains liver heat to extinguish wind while Tian Ma is moistening and nourishes liver yin to moderate the liver. Tian Ma is an endangered species, only within the past 30 years have people been able to cultivate it artificially. More than 80% of it sold today is the artificially cultivated variety.
