How was depression affected by the pandemic
European Commission: The effects of the pandemic on youth mental health
Numerous studies observed sharp increases in rates of depression, anxiety, loneliness and suicide attempts during pandemic.
Before the pandemic there were 10-20% of children suffering from mental illness, in the pandemic it rise to 20-25%. This number is probably an underestimate because mental illness is difficult to assess in young people.
They sent daily questionnaries to more than 600 adolescents. The results showed that as the pandemic went on rates of tension increased while vigour decreased.
The socioeconomic inequalities that already existed in society got bigger. Children that already were advantaged or in good schools didnt suffer that much from homeschooling. On the other hand, children who are dependent on the schools for their personal growth get hit the hardest.
‘One of the biggest misunderstandings of adolescence is that it’s only a time of trouble,’ continued Prof. Crone. ‘Of course, there are some tensions in every family … but the idea that all adolescents develop into inconsiderate risk-takers is a misunderstanding.’
