Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is a process of gathering evidence of student learning. These assessments are low stake and provide feedback to adjust instruction to fit student need.
Google JamBoard: This tool can be used as a formative assessment to quickly check student learning. Students can jot down what they learned that day or answer the essential question of that lesson.
Exit Slip: Students can answer an essential question as a form of reflection at the end of a lesson. Teacher can use this information to see what students learned.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are a form of pre-assessments used to determine what students know about a topic. These assessments can be used to reveal student strengths and weaknesses as well as misconceptions. Teachers can use this information to plan their instruction around student need.
K-W-L Chart: Students have an opportunity to share what they KNOW about the topic and what they WANT to learn before the teacher teaches to lesson. The teacher can adjust instruction to see how they see fit. Students then reflect on what they LEARNED after the lesson is over.
Primary Spelling Inventory (PSI): This assessment is a way to evaluate students' understanding of phonological awareness and spelling patterns.
Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: Interim/ Benchmark assessments are taken periodically throughout the year. These assessments are used to determine if students are progressing at the right track for future learning assessments.
STAAR: This is a Texas standardized test is used to measure student learning in their grade levels and determine their readiness for the next grade.

Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are high stake and are used to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit.
District Assessment: This is a test given to students by the district to assess student learning at the end of a unit.
