Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used as a form of pre-assessment to determine students strengths and weaknesses and also discover misconceptions that might exist. From this information, teachers can begin to plan individualized instruction for each student.
KWL Chart- A graphic organizer where students can write down things they already know, want to know and have learned about a topic. This is an easy way to grasp what kind of knowledge students already have before teaching a topic.

Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are done at the end of a learning period/ unit. These are used to assess student achievement in the material learned during the unit. These assessments are high stakes and hold a higher grade value than formative assessments.
Essay- An assessment in the form of an essay, allowing students to show what they have learned during a unit.
End of unit exam- Exams given at the end of a learning period to assess student knowledge over the content taught during the unit.
Formative
Definition: formative assessments are a way for teachers to check the progress of student learning and adjust instruction in a low stakes environment
Thumbs up check- students will give the teacher a thumbs up, middle or down to let her know how they feel about the content that was previously taught
+/? Exit Ticket- students will write one thing they learned (+) and one thing they still have a question about from today's lesson.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require students to complete a certain task rather than answering questions on a test

Write a summary- students can be assessed on reading comprehension by being tasked with reading a text and then writing a summary that entails all key points of the text.
Interim/ Benchmark
Definition: Interim/ benchmark assessments are used to determine whether or not students are on track to continue to succeed in their future learning

STAAR: The standardized test in the state of Texas that is given to assess knowledge learned in the grade level.
