Formative
Definition: Formative assessments gather evidence of student learning to provide feedback and adjust instruction to increase student achievement.
Think, Pair, Share: Students will answer a set of questions with a partner. They will share their responses with the class in a whole class discussion.
Exit Ticket: Students will complete an exit ticket that asks them to explain what they learned today to a friend that was absent.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to identify what students already know so teachers know where to start building knowledge.
Free-write: Give students a few minutes to respond to a prompt such as "write what you know about order of operations."
KWL Chart: A KWL chart shows the teacher what students already know about a topic and what questions they have. This is useful information for a teacher to have before starting a lesson.

STAAR Test: Texas's standardized test to measure academic knowledge and readiness to advance in school.
Final exams: Final exams are given at the end of a semester or school year to measure a student's learning of all the covered content.
