Formative Assessments
Definition: A formative assessment is a process that allows teachers to gain evidence to student learning. This is a chance to provide feedback to students and adjust your own instructional strategies as a result of the student learning data gathered. It could be formal or informal and should feature teacher-student interaction.
Think Pair Share: Students will work with a partner to reflect on the content they have just learned. They will think about a question/content, find a partner, and share their observations.
Tripwires: Students will list three things they found confusing or misleading about new content. The "tripwires" that they feel might have impacted their learning or could confuse a friend.

Performance Assessments
Definition: A performance assessments gives students the chance to communicate their learning and understanding by creating a product or performing a skill.
Student Portfolio: Students will be working on a portfolio of their assignments consistently throughout the year. They will be required to include all the designated assignments and organize them into a thoughtful presentation of their content that communicates their skill.
Character Poster: Creating a character poster over the protagonist or antagonists of a novel would be a performance task that utilizes important literary devices.
Summative Assessments
Definition: Summative assessments are used to check for student learning at the end of a unit or learning section. Because of its timing at the end of the unit, there are not often opportunities for student growth during a summative assessment. Rather, it is a high-stakes assessment that is a final evaluation.
Reading Test: Students will take a test at the completion of a novel for a major grade. This is to test understanding of the content and connections made to the novel as a whole.
Video Essay: Students will draft a video essay. It will test what they have learned in the writing unit and follow a formula just like a written essay.
Diagnostic Assessments
Definition: A diagnostic assessment are used to help teachers determine what students know before introducing a new concept, it can act as a pre-test. Instruction can be adjusted to meet student needs or common misconceptions using this data.
Survey: Students will complete a simple survey that acts as a pre-test and informally allows the teacher to check knowledge and understanding.
Personal Reflection/Rating: Students are given a list of concepts content and asked to rate their own personal understanding from a scale of 1 to 5. 1 being very confused and 5 being feeling good.
