Formative
Definition: Using student data from observations and prior assignments to adjust instruction in order to ensure all students are filling their knowledge gaps and being challenged.
EX 1: Class discussions; the students have the opportunity to pose questions about content and share their own thoughts and ideas as a class.
EX 2: Class observation; teacher walks around the class to observe students while they complete group or individual activities and monitor what students understand or don't.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Testing done intermittently throughout the school year to asses student progress and growth. These assessments provide little feedback to students.
EX 1: District/state assessments; tests administered at the beginning and end of the year to monitor what students learn throughout the school year.
EX 2: Weekly spelling tests; can regularly monitor the progress a student makes in breaking down the sounds of words into a correct spelling.
Summative
Definition: Assessment that is placed at the end of a unit to assess what the students learned throughout the time period overall.
EX 1: Traditional tests; students answer a series of multiple choice or true/false questions that are related to the class content.
EX 2: Cumulative projects; students complete project abiding by a rubric that can be done based on information learned in class or by completing research.
Performance
Definition: type of assessment where rather than assessing what a student has learned, it assesses their ability to perform a desired task.
EX 1: Portfolio, student maintains records and/or papers requested by a teacher and organizes them into a large collection to be reviewed later.
EX 2: Student journals; a collection of student writings, bellringers, and/or notes that continue to be used throughout the school year or semester.
Diagnostic
Definition: type of summative assessment used to understand students' current level of understanding in a certain content area. Can be used to plan activities or for classroom placement.
EX 1: Pre-assessment, students complete a pre-assessment prior to starting a unit or activity and the teacher uses student data to make small groups.
EX 2: Exit tickets; the opposite of a pre-assessment, administer after a lesson or activity to assess which students are still struggling with the concepts and which students are not.
