Summative
Definition: Summative assessments occur at the end of the unit. These are high-stakes test that are planned ahead of time.
Book Report - Students write a paper discussing topics in the book, what they learned, and what the book was about.
Unit Tests- Students take a multiple choice/true or false/short answer test over what they’ve learned over the past couple weeks.
Performance
Definition: A performance-based assessment asks students to show their learning by doing something (hands-on) instead of the tradition testing method.
Diaroma- Students create a scene from a book or life-like visual for cells for science. It is made by the student with styrofoam, popsicle sticks, paper, etc. It usually has short description to explain the presentation.
Make A Movie Trailer: Students video and edit themselves as if they are characters in a movie to create a trailer for their book.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic tests are taken at the beginning of the year or start of a unit to determine what students already know. It guides the rigor for the upcoming lesson.
Qualitative Reading Inventory: Diagnostic test that determines reading level by surveying student’s ability to read a word list and comprehend a short passage with follow-up questions.
K-W-L : The chart asks students to determine what they know already, what they want to learn, and what they have learned.
Formative
Definition: Formative Assessments occur during the lesson to highlight improvements areas and give students the opportunity to correct based on feedback. Typically low-stakes, formative assessments give teacher information to adjust their lesson accordingly.

Think, Pair, Share - Teacher gives students a couple of minutes to think about a topic. Students pair up and discuss what they thought. Teachers calls on groups to share what they discussed.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Benchmark test used to determine where students fall on a baseline and if they are on target with the learning goals.
STAAR Test STAAR Test are taken at the end of year and consist of everything taught over the two school semesters.
District Assessments - Taken every 6 weeks to measure students progress against other students in other district schools.
