Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Assessments that happen at pre-determined times in order to measure whether or not students' learning is on track to succeed in future assessments
STAAR: Standardized test used in the state of Texas that determines how much students have learned in one year and whether or not they are ready for the next grade.
Mid-Unit Assessment: Students take an assessment halfway through the unit to see how well they are understanding and grasping the material.
Diagnostic
Definition: Type of assessment used to measure students strengths and weaknesses and whether the student is below, at, or above grade level. Teachers use these to adjust instruction to the specific child and what they need.
Spelling Inventory: Spelling test that analyzes students understanding of certain phonics patterns in order to determine where they need direct instruction for phonics.
Pre-Assessment: Assessment given before instruction to determine what students already know about the topic.
Summative
Definition: Assessment that measures what students have learned after an extended period of learning. Results are used for report cards and district/state reports.
Final Exams: Students take a test at the end of the year that covers everything they learned in class that year.
End-of-Chapter Test: Students take a test at the end of a chapter, or unit, to demonstrate what they have learned over that period of learning.
Formative
Definition: Method of gathering evidence of what students have learned in order to adjust instruction and provide feedback. They happen during instruction, are typically shorter, and provide opportunity to scaffold student learning.
Google Form Exit Ticket: Students will answer a few questions about the topic covered in class that day. It will provide immediate feedback and show the teacher how well the students understood the lesson.
2 Sentence Summary: Students will write a 2 sentence summary about the main idea, or biggest take-away, from the lesson that day. This will show the teacher what the students understood and what they missed.
Performance
Definition: An assessment that requires students to complete a task instead of answering questions or taking a normal test.
Physical Project: Students must make something that demonstrates what they have learned from a unit. It can be a model, an example, a presentation, or anything they can make.
Portfolio: Students will put together an array of their work such as art, essays, projects, and other assignments over a particular topic.
