Different forms of pollution in the ocean
Garbage/ Plastic pollution
-
Garbage and plastic waste consists of bottles, wrappers, bags, straws and many more items. (Spring Power and Gas, 2018)
Many Garbage and plastic waste can be harmful to marine life as the waste is ingested or entangles them causing restricted movement.
According to the Center of Biological Diversity, researchers and studies estimate that there are 15-51 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean.
-
Any easy way to do your part to combat garbage and plastic pollution is to shop wisely, buy less plastic, and recycle when able to.
Eutrophication Pollution
Eutrophication is the process that creates harmful algal blooms in areas of water. This results in an decrease of carbon dioxide in the water.
When there is lack of carbon dioxide in water, it creates a, "dead zone", resulting in an area where fish and marine life is unable to sustain life.
It is estimated that there are over 400 dead zones in the oceans. (Spring Power and Gas, 2018)
Noise
Sound can be pollutant to the ocean as many fish and aquatic life use their sense of sound hearing to navigate the ocean, find food, and survive.
-
Sounds of boats, cargo ships, oil exploration and other loud sounds can affect life forms in the ocean. (Spring Power and Gas, 2018
Some ways to combat Noise pollution include; maximizing noise-free intervals, slower speeds of boats and cargo ships, and management implications. (National Park Service, 2021)
Carbon Dioxide pollution
Carbon Dioxide is produced by the burning of fossil fuel which can affect the acidic levels of the ocean. (Spring Power and Gas, 2018)
As Carbon Dioxide is dissolves into the ocean and the acidic levels rise, this causes the PH level in the ocean to change, resulting in harmful affects for ocean reef and shellfish. (Spring Powers and Gas, 2018)
According to the Union of Concerned Scientist, The best way to help with Carbon Dioxide pollution is to do your part and act on climate change.
Oil Seepage and Spills
Oil seepage and spills can caused by underground oil pipeline, boats and other vehicles
Oil in the ocean can be harmful to marine life as it affects the ability for marine life to fully grow in their environment as they can experience symptoms including; enlarged livers, change in heart rate, fin erosion, and reposition abilities. (National Ocean Services, 2021)
When proper fishing is in place, oil spills in the ocean can affect how humans obtain food as many fish that have been harmed by oil spills are unsafe to eat.
From the Oil spill in 2010, many sea animals were harmed affecting the ecosystem of the ocean. It is estimated that 167,000 sea turtles were harmed or killed due to harmful effects of the oil. (Deepwater Horizon's Impact on Wildlife, 2020)
Some ways to combat oil spills and seepage include; using oil booms, using skimmers, disposing of oil correctly, and educating yourself on oil seepages and spills in your native area. (Marine Insight, 2021)
