Formative
Definition: an assessment used while teaching the content to guide and adjust future learning and instruction. Used as evidence of students learning and progress in understanding the content.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: an assessment is used to determine where the students learning is throughout the school year. (If they are on track, falling behind in learning, or ahead of the pack wth the content.) Tracks their progress towards future assessments and goals set with their learning.

Summative
Definition: an assessment used at the end of an instructional unit. Used to evaluate student's overall learning and understanding of the content.

Performance
Definition: an assessment that requires the student to demonstrate/show that they know the content by completing an open-ended task

Diagnostic
Definition: an assessment used to inform the teacher the students knowledge on a topic before teaching it. This is also known as a pre-assessment. It informs the teacher of what the students knowns already and what they need more practice/instruction on.
