Formative
Definition: A Formative Assessment is the process of gathering evidence of student learning to provide feedback for guiding instruction and behaviors to enhance student achievement. This can be accomplished through informal means.
Journal Entry: In their journal students will summarize what they thought the main take away from the lesson was.
Exit Ticket (Google Slides): At the end of a lesson each student is assigned a slide in google slides where they answer a prompt relating to the lesson.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An Interim/Benchmark assessment is conducted at certain points throughout the year to determine where a student is in their learning, their growth, possible learning habits, and their progress to set goals.
STAAR 2.0: STAAR 2.0 is the standardized test that is replacing the original STAAR this school year. It tests each student has achieved mastery over the core subjects for their grade level.
BOY, MOY, and EOY Map Testing: My school district does their benchmark testing at the beginning of the year (BOY), middle of the year (MOY), and end of the year (EOY). It shows a student's growth throughout the year and determines if a student is progressing at an appropriate rate.
Summative
Definition: A Summative Assessment is a formal assessment of student knowledge at the end of a learning period. It determines what they have learned and the effectiveness of the lessons through the learning period.
End of Unit Test: With an end of unit test, instructors can formally assess student learning at the end of the unit.
Paper: Students write a paper at the end of a learning period over the topics discussed during the unit.
Performance
Definition: A Performance Assessment requires students to demonstrate their knowledge through a task where they can produce what they know and can do. It differs from other assessments where they are just answering questions.
Presentations: Students compile their knowledge over a topic and create a presentation (either individually, or with a group) and present their learning to the class.
Socratic Discussion: Students have a discussion as a class over a topic they have been learning about. There different perspectives can be heard and it encourages deeper thinking. At the end students can reflect on what was discussed and possibly come out of it with another perspective.
Diagnostic
Definition: A Diagnostic Assessment is used to identify student's strengths and weaknesses in different domains. They help instructors determine what they can do to best address a student's specific needs.
Primary Spelling Inventory (PSI): The Primary Spelling Inventory is a diagnostic tool that assesses the word knowledge that students have and groups them by their spelling developmental stage.
Running Records: Running Records are a diagnostic tool that analyzing and document a student's reading behaviors.
