Formative
Definition: This type of assessment is made to help give feedback to students and to analyze the students learning and does not impact their grades. Instructors will alter instruction to the areas the students seem to be struggling to aid in comprehension of the content.
Low Stakes quiz: Give the students a quiz with a few questions about the content to see if they understand the content.
"What stuck with you?" Exit ticket- This is where you give each child a sticky note and they write what they thought the most important thing they learned about is and then have them place it on a board next to their name.
Performance
Definition: This assessment has a student perform a task and/or produce a product to assess their knowledge, instead of the normal route of taking a test to determine comprehension.
Skits: Have the students perform what they learned during a unit to determine their comprehension of a subject.
Design and conduct an experiment: Have the students pose their own questions about a topic they have been learning about and design a lab to test their theories to determine their comprehension of a subject.
Diagnostic
Definition:This assessment type is given before a unit to determine where a student's strength and weakness lie, as well as and misconceptions they may have over a topic.
Survey: This is a great way for the instructor to see where they student is most comfortable and where they struggle, and determine whether or not they possess any misconceptions.
Running Record: A way to determine a student's reading level to determine where the student is at and where to help them grow.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: These are assessments given to students throughout the year to determine if the students are comprehending what they are being taught and are on track according to their grade level.
BOY, MOY, EOY(Beginning, Middle, End of Year) Assessment: This is an assessment given in the beginning, middle, and of the year to determine where the student is at in a certain subject area and where they need to grow.
STARR: A standardized test given at the very end of the year to determine what the student has learned and if they have grown in their grade level.
Summative
Definition: They are cumulative assessments meant to test a student's learning and the effectiveness of the teaching of the students and are used at the end of a unit. These are high stakes testing with high stakes for their grade.
End of semester exam: Exams given to students to see if they have comprehended what all they have learned.
End of term paper: The student will turn in a paper/essay detailing what they learned about during the unit, in order to determine comprehension.
