Formative
Definition: informal assessments that provide student feedback. These assessments are often use to modify instruction and aren't normally stressful.
Quickwrite: Students have 1-3 minutes to brain dump what they learned or what they know about a topic.
Think-Pair-Share: Students will be prompted with a content question. given time to formulate an answer and then share with class members in pairs or small groups.
Benchmark
Definition: Benchmarks are periodic content area exams designed to assess student growth and achievement. These exams are usually high stakes and stressful for students.
STAAR: The star test is the Texas State level benchmark exam. The test determines student achievement in select courses for particular years and curriculum.
District Benchmarks: Some districts create their own benchmarks for tested or untested courses to assess student preparation for standardized tests or future courses.
Summative
Definition: Higher stakes assessments of knowledge throughout a course or unit. This assessment is used as a final assessment and doesn't greatly impact modifications to instruction.

Portfolio: A summative assessment of learning using assignments from the duration of the unit or course. Typically highlights student growth in addition to content comprehension
Diagnostic
Definition: An assessment that identifies strengths, weaknesses, and misconceptions. usually to assist in the construction of a lesson.
KWL Chart: Students list 3 things they know before the activity , 2 things they now wonder during the activity, and 1 thing they learned after.

Definition: An assessment that requires students to perform a task rather than traditional assessment types.
Write a lab report: Students perform and write a lab report about a project to provide evidence for method and processes in a science classroom
