Formative
Definition: Formative assessments take place all throughout the learning process/unit to gauge how well students are comprehending the content, so that the teacher can modify instruction as needed. They can be both formal and informal in nature.
DLIQ Exit Ticket: Students write something they Did in class, something they Learned, something they found Interesting, and something they still have a Question about.
Quiz: Quizzes allow teachers to get continuous data throughout the time instructing specific content so that they can re-teach/modify instruction.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to assess if students are failing to meet or able to meet the curriculum standards/goals for a given period.
STAAR: Texas standardized testing method to assess all public school students and compare them across their grade level in various content areas.
District Assessments: The same test given to all students in a school district based on their grade level at each 9 weeks.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are given as a "wrap up" or final measurement of learning on all of the content taught. It's purpose is to show how much the student has learned throughout the module/unit/year.
End of Year Assessment: Assessments given at the end of the year to measure how much the student learned.

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used to identify areas of student strength and weaknesses. This information can be used to modify/enhance instruction based on the data retrieved.
Pre-Tests: Pre-tests can be used at the beginning of the year or beginning of unit instruction to assess what students already know and what they need to learn.

Performance
Definition: A performance assessment requires students to use what they know/understand to complete an open-ended task.

Portfolio: Students compile everything they have completed as a result of learning and create a portfolio to demonstrate their understanding.
