Formative
Definition- This is a quick way to assess students in the class to see their knowledge. You can change your lesson plans as needed, depending on your assessment. These assessments usually are not for a grade. You can use the assessment to guide you on your next step.
Exit tickets- The teacher can decide what questions she would like to ask the students, usually 1-4.
Thumbs Up or Down- The teacher assess the students by asking question and seeing if they they understand or not.
Summative
Definition- Usually done at the end of a unit to assess student learning. They are usually taken for a grade and have high stakes.

Project- This is a final project over what they have learned in the unit. The students must be creative and exhibit their knowledge through this project.

Diagnostic
Definition- These assessments are used as a way to determine a students needs and strengths. These pre assessments also measure students misconceptions. A teacher can use the data from the diagnostic to plan their future lessons.

Checklists or Surveys- Students can complete a checklist or survey to assess their knowledge of a specific area.
Performance
Definition- This is a task rather than a test, that a student is to preform, to see if the student can complete it.
Act-it-Out- Having the student act out or retell what they just learned. This can be from a story or lesson that they just went over in class.
Mind Map- Much like this assignment, the student must create a map of their knowledge to display their learning.
