Interim/Benchmark
Definition: a generally formal assessment in which testing is done periodically throughout the year and is used to adjust instruction or as a reflection of a student's success on report cards or district reports
Unit Test: A test that is taken at the end of a unit to assess a student's learning regarding topics specific to that unit.
Weekly Spelling Tests: Tests given each week over specific spelling words to show the teacher what word students are struggling with or have mastered in order to adjust instruction for the next week.
Formative
Definition: an informal or formal assessment that is taken for the goal of seeing where students are at in their learning and using the results to adjust instruction appropriately, and to give students information or feedback on how they are doing
DLIQ: At the end of class, students would write what they Did, what they Learned, what they found Interesting, and any Questions that they still have in which the teacher would look at these responses and take them into account.
Sticky Note Exit Ticket: At the end of class, students would pick sticky note and place it on a chart that has varied options for levels of confidence in the topic that is being taught. They could also write something specific that they feel confident in or confused about. This would inform the teacher what students are struggling and need additional help as well as what students may need to be challenged.
Summative
Definition: a formal assessment that is taken for the goal of measuring how much students have learned or achieved over the course of a unit, semester, year, etc.
EOC Test: "End of Course" testing that is done to determine what a student has learned throughout the year.
STAAR: State testing that is done to determine what standards students have mastered over the course of each school year
Performance
Definition: an assessment in which students are asked to "perform" or do some kind of task to demonstrate their learning
Debate: Students would debate each other and show their understanding of a topic that has been taught in class
Design/Conduct an Experiment: Students would come up with their own idea for an experiment, design the ways in which it would be performed, and conduct it on their own to show mastery of their topic
Diagnostic
Definition: an assessment that is used to determine what students know about a specific subject and what they need more help with in order to find ways to increase their success
Informal Quiz: Students would take a quick, ungraded quiz before a new topic is taught to see what they already know or what they don't know.
Free-Write: Students would be asked to write anything they know about a specific topic that is about to be taught to see what they know beforehand.
