Assessments

Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to measure student understanding in the midst of learning and adjust instruction to best fit student need. They are a more casual type of testing and aren't usually worth many points because the student is still in the process of learning.
Questioning: A teacher asks students questions throughout a lesson. They use this knowledge to guide instruction and correct misconceptions.
Homework: Homework allows for students to get extra independent practice. A teacher can review homework and see what misconceptions or lack of foundation students have when they are not being directly taught.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim or benchmark exams are given to determine student performance and if they will reach their goals on future assessments based on their current rate of progress.
STAAR Benchmark: Students often take the previous year's STAAR test as a benchmark in the early spring to determine if they are on pace to pass the STAAR and to practice test taking skills and endurance. The results from this are used to guide instruction in preparation for STAAR.
IStation: Students take a test once a month over reading skills and knowledge. The teacher can compare each score to determine if they are on track to reaching their end of year goals.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments ask students to use their knowledge in a new way by physically demonstrating their proficiency in skills or content knowledge to an observer, rather than by answering questions.
Historical Figures Gallery Walk: Students research a historical figure, then demonstrate their knowledge by dressing up as the figure and explaining their figure's important moments to observers.
Inventions: Students use their knowledge of simple machines to design a new invention to do a basic task. In their presentation, they explain how their invention works, how it was constructed, and what simple machines are used in the process.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are the final measurement of a student's knowledge or ability to complete a skill. These take place at the end of units or classes.
STAAR test: The STAAR test is given to determine a student's final level of content knowledge at the end of the year.
AP tests: AP tests determine student knowledge over a whole year and are used to identify if students have learned the equivalent of a college class in their studies.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of the year or unit to determine what already understand, their strengths, and their weaknesses. These assessments are used to initially plan the scope of instruction and set long term goals for learning.
Running Records: The initial running record is a diagnostic report to determine where students are in relation to their peers and the curriculum. These results are used to set goals and create reading groups of similarly leveled peers.
Where to Start Word Test: Determines what reading level students are starting the year at based on how many words they can read in specific categories.
