temperate coniferous rain forests
Temperate coniferous rainforests occur in a broad band area across North America, parts of northern Europe and much of Asia(Russia)
Climate: winters are long and cold. Temps can stay below 0 for 3 to 4 months a year
Natural vegetation is mostly coniferous trees such as fir, spruce and larch
thick bark protects bark from cold
the seeds are inside cones to protect them from the cold
The leaves are shaped like thin needles witch slows water loss
The leaves most trees stay green all year so they can start making energy for the the tree as soon as winter is over
The branches slope so snow can fall off
Coniferous: trees that have thin needles for leaves and cones
coniferous forests cover large areas of land but they have fewer plants and animals than any other forest
most animals in coniferous forests hibernate during winter months
HUMAN ACIVITIES
some trees used to make paper
There are valuable mats such as gold and iron ore in forests mines and oil wells have been made to remove these materials
timber is used in building and furniture making
large towns have developed in areas where there are minerals
the are saw mills in forests that saw trees into different proportions
today the main activity is the timer industry
First human activity in the coniferous forests was hunting
