For students to understand how to use properties of operations to solve multiplication problems
Give students strategies to help them solve multiplication problems
The next problem, (3x2)x5 was introduced and then the teacher had students turn and talk with a partner about what they think the array would look like
The teacher projected on the board a problem and drew an array of circles under it. The problem was 3x5x2 and she solved it using order of operations, for example, she did (3x5)x2 and drew circles of three groups of 5 under the (3x5)x2. To add the x2 at the end, she drew another array of 3x5 to show that the problem wanted two sets of 3x5, or 15.
Turn and talk with a partner
The teacher called her students mathematicians which I think can help build confidence in their math skills
The teacher had the students gather on the carpet to watch what was happening on the board during modeling and doing the activity together and then had them move to their desks for independent work time
Students paid attention when the teacher was talking
Students got distracted when a volunteer was drawing an array to be shown on the projector
