Formative
Definition: Allows for quick feedback for the teacher and the students. This type of assessment can help develop instructional strategies in areas that the students are struggling in. Formative assessments tend to be low stress and cover a small amount of information.
Formal Exit ticket: questions that cover the information taught in class. The results of the exit ticket can help the teacher determine what needs to be reviewed during the following class.
Informal Show the steps: students when completed assignments are expected to show all the steps when solving the equation. This allows the teacher to analyze what they are doing and clarify why the solution is incorrect.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Formative to be used as data but does not provide feedback to the students. Occurs periodically and covers a large amount of information. It is used to determine if a student is on track based.
STAAR: Content focused test that demonstrates a student's knowledge for the grade level they are at. The data can also demonstrate how well the school teaches content.
District assessment: A digital test provided to students at the end of a nine week period. The students are tested on information set by the district and the results do not always do into the grade book. The data is used to compare schools and some teachers go over the most missed questions to provide some feedback.
Summative
Definition: A high stakes assessment of the student's ability to recall a large chunk of information. Due to the high requirement of the summative assessment the grade tends to be a large portion of the overall grade.
IB assessment: some schools have an IB program that requires students to create a project that incorporates their real life. For example, after the end of a unit a math teacher had the students create a budgeting plan using their new math knowledge. The project took most students a week to complete.
Final exams: students complete a final exam that demonstrates their knowledge over the course of the year. Final exams tend to be 5 to 20 percent of a student's overall grade.
Performance
Definition: A form of assessment that can encourage engagement in the classroom. Unlike answering some questions the students are expected to perform the information.
Make a song: Students make a song to help memorize an important rule in mathematics. Demonstrates the students' knowledge by putting what they learn into their own words.

Diagnostic
Definition: Formatted as pre-assessments to help teachers adjust instruction. It helps determine the strengths and weaknesses of a student.
