Definition: A formative assessment is an assessment given by teachers during instruction. It is used to give feedback, guide instruction, and improve learning.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Tests given periodically to evaluate where students are in their learning and to determine if they are on track
Examples: Standardized tests, End of the course exams
Diagnostic
Definition: Tests that allow the teacher to see the students' strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills before they begin learning

Definition: An assessment that requires the student to demonstrate what they have learned through open ended tasks
Examples: Student logs, Journals
