Formative
Definition: Formative assessments are used to see where students are at in their learning and adjust instruction currently or for future lessons. These assessments are used to monitor current learning and are considered low-stakes.
Pear Deck: Teacher creates slides that allow students to pick answer choices, type in response, solve on the screen. This is a great way to see how students are grasping content during instruction. You can see where the class as a whole needs to be retaught or individuals that need intervention on the content.
Quick writes: Teacher will give students a topic/question to write over for 3-5 minutes to allow students to express what they know over the topic. The teacher can use this to see what students do and do not know over current instruction to help adjust future lessons.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to assess where students are at in their learning and are used to predict how students will do on future summative assessments. Is commonly used for cumulative learning.
District Assessments: These are exams that are given at the end of grading periods over multiple units. They assess the students knowledge of the content overall.
Benchmark Tests: These are given to students typically in the second half of the school year to assess their cumulative learning of the grade level. These are used as indicators on how the students will do on their STAAR test that year. Teachers can use this to target certain content areas in the upcoming weeks.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments are used at the end of large learning periods to assess student understanding of the content. These are considered high-stake assessments so they are weighted heavier than formative assessments.
Projects: Projects can be given towards the end of a unit over the topic that ask the student to use higher level thinking and branch the content beyond the classroom. These allow the teacher to see if the student comprehended the content.
Content Focus Area tests: These are exams that are given at the end of a unit. Generally only over one-two TEKS to see how the students grasped the content and where students have the opportunity to grow.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require students to think on a higher level to portray their knowledge in a way rather than answering test questions.
Design an Experiment: Students can design an experiment that require them to demonstrate their knowledge over the procedures as well as content. This gets them thinking on a higher level in order to apply their knowledge.
Podcast: Students can create a podcast with their classmates debating, or informing their listeners over the content. This requires them to apply their knowledge in a new way.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are generally given before upcoming content in order to see how much students know, what areas they lack in, and to see where they may hold misconceptions over the content.
Shared Reading: When introducing a new topic teachers can present students with a book and allow students to openly discuss what they do and don't know about the new topic.
Pre-Assessments: Given before the introduction of a content period to see what students know. Can be a simple assignment that students complete over general ideas in the upcoming content. This works for any subject area.
