Summative
Definition: Used at the end of a large chunk of learning, such as at the end of a unit or the school year, to evaluate student learning by comparing it against a standard. (high stakes)
Final Project: Students complete an assigned project that encompasses everything they've learned in the unit or at the end of the year.
Essay: Students are given a topic to write an essay to show what they've learned in the unit or at the end of the year.
Formative
Definition: an ongoing process of gathering evidence of student learning, evaluating the effectiveness of instruction, providing feedback, and adjusting instruction (low stakes)
Concept Map: students draw a concept map of the recently covered information to portray their understanding.
Research Proposal: Students review the research requirements and submit a possible proposal to receive feedback before beginning the assignment.
Performance
Definition: Students' application of knowledge is assessed through their demonstrations of learning in the form of open-ended tasks.
Portfolios: Students create a collection of their work to show their progress through the different topics they've covered.
Journals: Students submit a journal that includes their written journal entries throughout the allocated period of time.
Interim / Benchmark
Definition: Periodic testing throughout the school year, such as at the end of a term or unit, in the form of formal projects, written assignments, or tests.
STAAR: Texas standardized test given to students at the end of the year to assess their learning for that specific grade level.
End of Term Exam: Students are tested at the end of each semester to assess everything they've learned in that time period for that subject.
Diagnostic
Definition: Given at the beginning of a unit or course to assess where students currently stand and the results are used to plan instruction and differentiate for students.
Pre-Assessments: Students are given questions before beginning a unit to gauge what they already know about that topic.
KWL Chart: Students record information they already now, want to know, and what they've learned about a specific topic.
