Revision - Lessons 8 - 14
Lesson 8 - Tsunamis
a sub-marine earthquake displaces the sea bed vertically as a result of movement along a fault line
displaces a large volume of water in the ocean water column, which then moves outward in all directions from the place of displacement
tsunami characteristics include:
wave heights less than 1m
heights increase due to the sea floor getting shallower and an increase in the amount of friction
wavelengths are more than 100km
speeds are 500-950km/h
Lesson 10 - Tectonic Disasters
TECTONIC DISASTER - the realisation of a hazard when it causes a significant impact on a vulnerable population
TECTONIC EVENT - a naturally occurring event that poses risk to people and their livlihood
TECTONIC HAZARD - an event which has the potential to threaten life and property
Key Ideas
there is a relationship between hazard, vulnerability and reliance
the impacts of disasters vary hugely between locations
Definitions
VULNERABILITY - the ability to cope with, resist, anticipate and recover from a natural hazard
RISK - the probability of a hazard occurring and causing loss of life and/or livelihoods
RESILIENCE - the degree to which a society or environment can absorb a hazardous event and keep functioning - its ability to cope with stress and recover
