Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is a way of assessing students to get feedback to use for modifying and adjusting instruction. These assessments are low stakes, so they have little to no grade value.
Quick write: these can be used by teachers to address what the students have learned and remember well. They are very low stakes and can be used by the teacher to find out where their students are at and what they need support in.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are used to see where students are in their learning and determine if they are on track with their learning to do well on future assessments.
District Assessments: Every student in the district takes the same test to asses how much they've learned and gathered data to be used to increase learning in the next 9 weeks.

Summative
Definition:Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning at the end of a unit. These are usually high stakes, so they have a high grade value.
Unit exam: These are used at the end of a unit to gauge a students understanding of the unit. They are usually the highest point value.
Unit essay: These come at the end of a unit and ask students to answer a question that encompasses they entirety of the unit. They are asked to organize and write their response.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are used as forms of pre-assessments to determine a student's strengths and weaknesses as well as prior misconceptions. This information can help teachers to plan their instruction to meet student needs.
Bell ringer: These can be used in the beginning of class to understand the students' understanding of a topic. They can be quick activities that touch on things that will be covered in future classes to see where the students are.

Performance
Definition: A performance assessment is an assessment that requires students to perform a task rather than regular tests or answering questions.
Book review: Student writes a review on the book that was read in class. It is written in the form of a literary review and summarizes the plot while stating an opinion on the literary understanding of the piece.
Video analysis: Students make a video summarize the readings they have done. It allows them several ways to show their skils. The can use words images and/or acting to show their understanding.
