Characteristics of LOVE
"Love is often confused by chemistry." (Pg. 238)
Just because there is attraction, does not mean there is love.
"'Love' is often blind." (Pg. 238)
Do not neglect the input of family members and loved ones, when they are trying to give advice on your newfound love interest. Those around you are quicker to see the things that you cannot, once you begin falling for someone.
"'Love' changes over time." (Pg. 238)
Don't be so quick to jump from one relationship to the next one, or as our book says, become a "Serial dater." It is important to note that there are certain stages in our relationships, and in order to stick to one relationship, we must adapt to the changes and the seasons.
"Love-based marriages are more fragile than arranged marriages." (Pg. 239)
Divorce rates of arranged marriages are less than that of marriages built on love and attraction. This is because Arranged marriages are built on family and stability, as our text says. (Pg. 239)
"Love is not a feeling." (Pg. 239)
"Love is often referred to as a feeling, but feelings are transient and ever changing." (Pg. 239)
"Real love grows over time while superficial love will fade." (Pg. 239)
"Real love realizes that love does not just "happen" but takes time, effort, and commitment to build." (Pg. 239)
"Our language for love is inadequate." (Pg. 239)
We get one word to describe many things in our life that give us joy and happiness. Our love for something is not well portrayed by just using the word love, because we love SO many different things. Personally, I feel that this is when we let action come in and play a part in our loving feelings. Is love really love if there's no action to back up your words?
"Love is often "misdiagnosed."" (Pg. 239)
Love is unconditional. Meaning, without condition. You should not have to earn someone's love or put a limit on what love looks like.
"Love is paradoxical." (Pg. 239)
Love is not always enough to keep a relationship going. You have to act our your love. You have to try every day to show love, and fight for your relationship.
"Giving love is receiving." (Pg. 239)
"You must give love to receive love. In fact, love is unique in that the more you give, the more you will have to give and the more you will receive." (Pg. 239)
