Postclassical narratology: Approaches and analyses - Coggle Diagram

- - - - Moreover, postclassical narratology proposes extensions of the classical model that open the fairly focused and restricted realm of narratology to methodological, thematic, and contextual influences from outside.
        
        The reorientations reflect the impact of literary theory on academia in the 1980s and 1990s.
        
        Three major lines of development: (1) the rise of "new technologies and emergent methodologies"; (2) the move "beyond literary narrative"; (3) the extension of narratology into new media and "narrative logics"
        
        Four types of interactions
        
        (1) (methodological) work that extends the classical paradigm intradisciplinarily by focusing on theoretical blind spots, gaps, or indeterminacies within the standard paradigm
        
        (2) (methodological) work that absorbs theoretical and/or methodological insights and imports them, producing, for instance, narratological speech act theory, psychoanalytic approaches to narrative speech, or deconstructive narratology
        
        (3) (thematic) work that integrates variable emphases into the classical model, examples are feminist, queer, ethnic or minority-related, and postcolonial approaches to narrative
        
        4) (contextual) work that extends narratological analysis to literature outside the novel, including a consideration of various media, the performative arts as well as non-literary narratives

      - (2) the treatment of narrative as a langue in contrast with the pragmatic focus on the parole of individual narratives in postclassical approaches
      - (3) classical narratology is a closed system whereas postclassical narratologies are emphasizing the dynamics of narration
      - (4) the shift from the functional analysis of features to a reader-oriented focus on strategies and applications in the dichotomy
      - (5) classical bottom-up analysis in contrast with postclassical top-down inferencing
      - (6) opposing "(reductive) binarism" with a "preference for holistic cultural interpretation" and (7) structuralist taxonomy with thematically and ideologically directed analysis
      - (8) where classical narratology remained shy of moral grounding, postclassical narratologies open themselves to mora issues, analogously causing (10) a shift from descriptive to interpretative and evaluative paradigms
      - (9) classical narratology's aim to provide a "poetics of fiction" is superseded by "putting the analytical toolbox to interpretative use"
      - (11) the rising of diachronic or historical narratology
      - (12) universalism vs. particularism
      - (13) a relatively unified discipline vs. "an interdisciplinary project consisting of heterogenous approaches
      - Postclassical narratologies seem to move toward a grand contextual, historical, pragmatic and reader-oriented effort.
