Identify the struggling student
Social and Academic
Has emotional and behavioral outbursts
Stays alone consistently, chooses not to do things with classmates
Has a difficult time communicating
Not able to maintain a relationship with the teacher or others
Not able to grasp content and concepts
Seems disengaged and distracted consistently
Not able to complete tasks
Data
Analyze assessment/test scores
Attendance Records
Use ABC tool to collect data on the student
Talk to school nurse
Get parents involved
Ask the parents how the student is at home
Create a plan with the parents to support the student in and outside of school
Notify parents about the student
Stay in contact with parents for progression and feedback
Process of supporting the student
Ask the child if they are feeling a specific way
Ask other teachers how the student is in their class and how they interact with other students not in their homeroom class
Ask the child questions
Let other colleagues and administration know of my concerns
Implement strategies and benchmarks for the student to meet through collaboration with parents, teachers and administration
Observe the student
Assess if any changes or progress develops for the student
Send for Referral
If no changes or progression occurs, ask to have the student evaluated by a specialist
Create a special education team to consider what the student needs, what the school can provide to meet those needs, decide the appropriate place to deliver these services to the student
Does the student need an IEP?
Also as a team: set goals and objectives for the student, set benchmarks and duration of time to meet these benchmarks, set specific assessments to use for the specific challenges the student may have, set up future meetings for the special education team to continue to support the student for as long as needed
