Simple past and past continuous
Simple Past
We use the past simple for complete actions in the past.
In the past simple there are regular verbs and irregular verbs.
Grammatical Rules
Form
If the verb ends in a short vowel and a consonant (except “y” or “w”), we double the final consonant.
Stop - Stopped
With verbs that end in a consonant and a “y”, the “y” is changed to an “i”.
Study - Studied
For verbs that end in an “e”, we just add “-d”.
Change - Changed
Structure
Positive
Subject + verb (-d, -ed) + complemet
I was a Doctor
Negative
Subject + did not + verb in basic form +complement
They didn’t discuss the problem last night
Interrogative
Did + subject + verb in basic form + complement ?
Did she call me?
Past Continous
Express actions or states that were taking place in the past when another action or state interrupts or reinforces it.
Gives information about facts or situations in a specific time.
Mention two or more actions from the past that happened at the same time.
Structure
Affirmative
Subject + auxiliary verb (to be) + gerund verb (ing) + complement
Your dog was playing with its toys when I arrived
Negative
Subject + auxiliary verb (to be) + not + gerund verb (ing) + complement
I was not studying Physics at that time.
Interrogative
Auxiliary verb (to be) + subject + gerund verb (ing) + complement + ?
Were you eating candies when I entered the room?
The auxiliary verb of this verb tense is the verb to be (was / were).
