Assessments
Formative
A formative assessment is informal check of understanding. It should be used to plan for future instruction and can be adjusted as needed.
A thumbs up/thumbs down check from students to gauge understanding to determine if the lesson should progress
Fist to Five check for understanding: Students hold up 1-5 fingers based on how confident they are about what was just learned.
Interim/Benchmark
A benchmark assessment is a comparison of students results based on previous assessments. This happens multiple times throughout the year.
Monthly iStation Tests: This test occurs every month of the school year and determines a goal for the student based on a pre-determined standard. This also allows to see the student's progression.
Weekly Spelling Tests: Results are based on the Spelling Test. Spelling Tests would occur once a week and can show progression throughout the year.
Summative
A summative assessment is a formal assessment that takes place at the end of a unit. It is used to determine mastery of a topic.
End of Unit Test: This test happens at the end of the unit to determine if the student has mastered the concept.
STAAR Test: The STAAR Test is an example of a summative assessment as it is formal and tests the knowledge of students compared to a standard.

Performance
A performance assessment tests is a student can apply the knowledge they have learned. This is them creating something instead of answering questions.
Free Response Question: Students can write about what they have learned. Composing sentences about what they have learned is a performance assessment.
Drawing a Picture: Creating a picture of what happened in a story or what a student learned is a performance assessment.
Diagnostic
Diagnostic Assessments are used to determine what a student knows to direct instruction. It is helpful information for the teacher.

Unit Pre-Test: A pre-test at the beginning of a unit helps the teacher understand what students do and don't know to further instruction.
