Formative
Definition: A way of assessing student performance on the fly. These assessments are done to adjust instructional practices and are not meant as a final assessment of performance.
Discussion Groups: Students are given a prompt, usually an opinionated question, and must develop a consensus response to it. This requires them to explain their answer in detail to their group mates.
Essential Question Exit Tickets: A student answers a general question addressing the topic of the day's lesson. The question is open-ended, but must be supported with evidence taken from the material taught.
Performance
Definition: An assessment that requires students to perform a task as an alternative to answering traditional questions in a quiz or written format.

Conducting a Lab Expiration: Gives students a chance to display their proficiency in the use of lab equipment and techniques, as well as form and test a hypothesis.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to determine if students are keeping up with learning expectations or if changes need to be made to ensure they are progressing and are prepared for future assessments.
District Assessments: Used by a school district to track progress of their students across the entire district.
STAAR: A standardized test given by the state of Texas to determine students knowledge at their grade level.
Summative
Definition: These are used to determine a students progress at the end of a class/unit. These are usually a large part of a students grade.
Final Paper: Used to determine both a students knowledge of the subject matter and how their research and composition skills have improved.
Final Presentation: Used to determine how a student's public speaking skills and their ability to form an argument have improved. It can also be used to evaluate knowledge of content.
Diagnostic
Definition: A form of per-assessment that evaluates a students strengths and weaknesses and determines what misconceptions the instructor will need to counter. These assessments provide vital information for planning instruction.
Pr-assessment Quiz: A short questionnaire given to students on the first day of a class to determine what they already know and to be used to track their progress throughout the semester/year.
SAQ Bell-ringer: A short answer question given as students walk into class to prime them for the days lesson and determine what they already know. Some students are called on to share their answers aloud.
