Summative
Definition: a summative assessment is an assessment evaluating student learning at the end of an instructional unit.
Unit test: a test given to the students at the end of an instructional period which can be fill in the blank, matching, or multiple choice questions.
Final project: students demonstrate what they have learned from and instructional period through an independent final project of explaining and making connections.
Diagnostic
Definition: a diagnostic assessment is an assessment intended to help teachers identify what students know and can do prior to delivery of instructional content.
Hot/Cold terminology: before instruction, students place vocabulary words in two different columns, hot and cold. Hot meaning they confidently know the term and cold meaning they do not know the word.
Running Records: students show their ability to read fluently and comprehend a story to determine their beginning reading level.
Performance
Definition: a performance assessment is an assessment that requires students to demonstrate what they know and are able to do through open-ended tasks.
Laboratory investigations: students are able to demonstrate what they have learned by creating experiments and drawing conclusions.
Act it out: students are able to retell the events in a story independently or with a small group show their understanding of plot and important events.
Formative
Definition: a formative assessment is an assessment used to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching.

Turn and Talk: Students turn and talk to a partner about the content. Teacher will be able to listen and ask students to share with the class while clearing misconceptions.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: an interim/benchmark assessment is a comparison of student understanding or performance against a set of uniform standards within the same school year.
