Warm the Interior
Fu Zi
Appendage
This is pure yang. it enters upper, middle and lower jiao to revive and rescue the devastated yang. Acrid, hot, toxic. Disperses cold and unblocks all 12 channels.
DUI YAO - Da Huang
Use for cold constipation. The patient may have constipation but there is cold in the interior. Da Huang helps to move while Fu Zi warns the interior. Featured in Da Huang Fu Zi tang. Da Huang enters the liver to relieve liver constraint and provide an exit through the bowels. It can also be used for cold cough with cold constipation. According to dr Luk if insufficient blood, add Dang Gui.

DUI YAO - Gan Jiang
Both are acrid and warming. Together they warm the interior and despel cold. They revive the yang. Gan Jiang helps reduce the toxicity of Fu Zi.
Fu Zi 6-10g, Gan Jiang 6-10g
DUI YAO - Huang Qi
Used together for cold spontaneous sweating due to yang deficiency.
Fu Zi 6-10g, Huang Qi 10-30g
Gan Jiang
Dried Ginger
Enters Heart, Lung, Spleen and Stomach. Preeminent herb for warming the middle-jiao. Largely focuses on the middle-jiao although it does also warm the lungs. Transforms thin mucus. Rescues the devastated yang. Excessive use can consume the yin.
DUI YAO - Fu Zi
Both are acrid and warming. Together they warm the interior and despel cold. They revive the yang. Gan Jiang helps reduce the toxicity of Fu Zi.

DUI YAO - Huang Lian
Featured together in Ban Xia Xie Xin tang. For clumping of heat and cold in the middle burner. This results in focal distention that is soft to palpation. Gan Jiang is hot and acrid so it warms and lifts. Huang Lian is cold and bitter so it cools and drains.

DUI YAO - Wu Wei Zi, Xi Xin
Trio used together in Xiao Qing Long tang. Their role in the formula is to support warmth and yang of spleen and lungs to improve water metabolism and transform thing mucus. This then allows yang and qi to properly address the Wei level and secure the exterior. Wu Wei Zi balances the moving and dispersing nature of Gan Jiang and Xi Xin with astringency.
Gan Jiang 6-10g, Wu Wei Zi 3-10g, Xi Xin 1-3g
Rou Gui
Cinnamon Bark
Sweet, hot and acrid. Enters Heart, Kidney, Liver and Spleen. Warms the Kidney, Spleen and Heart yang. It warms the channels and disperses cold. Leads fire back to its source. It enters the Liver and blood level to disperse cold in the blood. It promotes generation of qi and blood. Compared to Fu Zi this focuses on 4 organs while Fu Zi enters all 12 channels. Rou Gui is also acrid so it has some moving and dispersing properties to it compared to Fu Zi.
DUI YAO - Huang Lian
Featured as the only 2 ingredients in Jiao Tai Wan (Grand Communication Pill). Huang Lian dosage is 15g and Rou Gui is 1.5g. This is for Heart and Kidney disharmony. Huang Lian drains Heart fire that is flaring and Rou Gui warms Kidney yang to steam water and calm the Heart. For irritability, insomnia and palpitations.

Wu Zhu Yu
Evodia fruit
Acrid, bitter, hot and slightly toxic. Enters the Liver and Spleen. It warms both Liver and Spleen. Enters spleen to treat vomiting/diarrhea from cold. Also very drying so useful if there is dampness or phlegm as well. Warms the liver to treat liver cold affecting the stomach causing headache. Also used in Wen Jing tang (Warm the menses decoction) because it warms liver which helps warm blood and womb and menses. Also useful for pain due to cold in Liv/GB or Sp/St channels.
DUI YAO - Huang Lian
Used together in Zuo Jin Wan (Left Metal Pill). It is for Liver-Stomach disharmony causing GERD/abd pain. Huang Lian drains the Heart which is the son organ of Liver, thereby reducing Liver. Wu Zhu Yu is acrid and guides Liver heat downward. The ration of HL:WZY is 6:1. Reducing Heart also strengthens Lung which is where the name comes from.

Ding Xiang
Spike Fragrance
a.k.a. common Clove
Warm and acrid. Enters the Spleen and Kidneys. Warms the middle-jiao to treat cold symptoms. Also warms and strengthens kidney yang to treat male impotence and female deficient cold womb.
DUI YAO - Shi Di
Used together in Ding Xiang Shi Di tang. Especially for hiccups. Ding Xiang is warm and acrid and helps disperse cold in the spleen. Shi Di is neutral and astringent and helps to descend Stomach qi specifically for hiccups.

Gao Liang Jiang
Ginger from Gaoliang
Enters Spleen and Stomach. Acrid and hot. Very similar to Gan Jiang and Sheng Jiang. It focuses on stomach more than spleen in contrast to Gan Jiang. It's acridity is milder and it mobilizes the interior in contrast to Sheng Jiang which has a stronger acridity and mobilizes the exterior.
DUI YAO - Xiang Fu
Used together in Liang Fu Wan. Useful for abdominal pain or menstrual pain caused by liver qi stagnation with cold congealing the stomach.

Tu Si Zi
Splitting Silk Seeds
Versatile herb. First of all tonifies yang and essence, but also tonifies yin to lesser degree. It is neutral in temperature. Enters liver and kidneys. Benefits the eyes and also helps save recurrent or threatened miscarriages.
Yin Yang Huo
Licentious Goat Wort
Tonifies Kidney yang. This is a warm herb, especially if prepared in mutton fat. Main use is to tonify kidney yang, especially for treating impotence and improving sexual function. Also warms and unblocks wind-cold-damp in channels good for treating contractures and hemiplegia after stroke. Warmer and stronger yang tonic than Ba Ji Tian, but not as strong as Xian Mao.
Rou Cong Rong
Unhurried Grass
Enters kidney and large intestine. Sweet, salty and warm. This herb enters the kidney to tonify the yang and essence, especially to treat impotence, spermatorrhea, cold womb infertility. It also enters the large intestine and moistens and tonifies blood to treat constipation. Often paired with Dang Gui to tonify the blood. Unique in that it is warm, tonifies the yang and does not damage blood but actually tonifies it.
Du Zhong
Eucommia bark
Enters the kidney and liver. Sweet, warm, slightly acrid. This is a warm herb that tonifies the liver and kidney (although textbook does not specify whether yin or yang). It results in strengthening of the sinews and bones for back pain. Also results in calming the fetus and supporting pregnancy. Often paired with Xu Duan. XD enters the blood level of the kidney channel and together they strengthen sinews and bones and benefit pregnancy.
DUI YAO - Xu Duan
Both herbs tonify liver and kidney yang, and likely also some yin. Used together to treat lower extremity and low back pain. Also treats threatened miscarriage due to kidney deficiency. Du Zhong enters the qi level of the kidney and tonifies the qi. Xu Duan enters the blood level of the kidney and invigorates the blood.

Ba Ji Tian
Morinda root
Enters the kidney. Sweet, warm and acrid. This is a kidney Yang tonic. It is warm but also sweet so it doesn't damage the yin energy. Primarily used for impotence or infertility due to kidney yang deficiency. Also strengthens sinews and bones by tonifying kidney yang. Often paired with Rou Cong Rong because they both tonify kidney yang while not harming the kidney yin.
Sha Yuan Zi
Shayuan Seeds
Enters kidney and liver. Sweet, warm and astringent. This herb is sweet to tonify liver and benefit the eyes. Is also warm and astringent to strengthen kidney yang and secure the essence. Useful for low back pain, impotence, urinary incontinence etc.
DUI YAO - Bai Ji Li
Together they descend liver yang and raise kidney yang. Together they tonify the liver to benefit the eyes and tonify the kidneys to secure the essence. Bai Ji Li 6-10g, Sha Yuan Zi 6-10g.
Bu Gu Zhi
Psoralea fruit
Enters kidney and spleen. Acrid, bitter and very warm. This is a very warming herb. Acts on the kidney to tonify yang and secure the essence. Also warns and tonifies the spleen yang. It is astringent in nature so it is used in situations of urinary frequency, premature ejaculation, diarrhea etc.
DUI YAO - He Tao Ren
Together they help the kidney grasp the qi from the lung to treat cough and wheezing. Together they also strengthen the sinews and bones.
Bu Gu Zhi 6-10g, He Tao Ren 6-10g
DUI YAO - Rou Dou Kou
Bu Gu Zhi acts first on the kidney and second on the spleen to tonify yang and warm. Rou Dou Kou acts first on the spleen and second on the kidney to astringe, warm and bind. Together they treat daybreak diarrhea as in Si Shen Wan due to cold and yang weakness in kidney and spleen.

He Tao Ren
Walnut
Enters the kidney and lung. Sweet and warm. This is a gentle herb used as an assistant or in food therapy. It warms and tonifies kidney yang to strengthen the back and knees. Also warms the lungs and helps the kidney grasp lung qi to treat chronic cough and wheezing.
DUI YAO - Bu Gu Zhi
Together they help the kidney grasp the qi from the lung to treat cough and wheezing. Together they also strengthen the sinews and bones.
Bu Gu Zhi 6-10g, He Tao Ren 6-10g
Xu Duan
Reconnect What is Broken
Enters the kidney and liver. Bitter, sweet, acrid, slightly warm. Enters liver and kidney. For weakness in the back and knees as well as contractures and atrophy. It invigorates blood to help heal pain from trauma and "reconnect what is broken." Also stops bleeding during pregnancy and calms the fetus, useful for threaten pregnancies due to weakness in the kidney and liver.
DUI YAO - Du Zhong
Both herbs tonify liver and kidney yang, and likely also some yin. Used together to treat lower extremity and low back pain. Also treats threatened miscarriage due to kidney deficiency. Du Zhong enters the qi level of the kidney and tonifies the qi. Xu Duan enters the blood level of the kidney and invigorates the blood.

Yi Zhi Ren
Benefit Intelligence Nut
Enters the kidney and spleen. Acrid and warm. Essentially this is a warm binding herb. It warms and binds the kidney to treat urinary incontinence, spermatorrhea and irregular uterine bleeding. It warms and binds the spleen to treat cold diarrhea. Similar to Bu Gu Zhi but Yi Zhi Ren firstly warms spleen yang and secondarily kidney yang. Bu Gu Zhi firstly warms kidney yang and secondarily the spleen. Yi Zhi Ren can uniquely help uterine bleeding while Bu Gu Zhi uniquely treats low back pain.
DUI YAO - Fu Ling
Yi Zhi Ren warms kidney and spleen to treat leakage from cold. When combined with Fu LIng they strengthen and warn the spleen to treat vomiting, diarrhea, salivation and abdominal pain.
