Lady Macbeth's soliloquy- act one scene five
'come, you spirits
she calls upon the spirits as- in the great chain of being- they would've been who took the baby from her to give to the king for him to kill- therefore she calls upon the spirits do do the same to the king as they did to her child
shes calling upon someone with more power than the king to support the power she wants
this hints at witchcraft as she can communicate to the higher powers above the monarchy which would've been seen as a witch- like power in the elizabethan era
'raven'
a raven has dark feathers and Lady Macbeth has darkness to hide the schemes so she can hide among the ravens dark feathers
ravens are also seen as bad omens and often symbolise something ill. They are also supposed to represent prophecy and insight which links back to Macbeth's prophecies and how this may foreshadow the outcome of his prophecies
this also has links to witchcraft and the supernatural because the raven may be seen as Lady Macbeth's familiar which would be a terrible thing in the elizabethan era
'fill me from the crown to the toe top- full of the direst cruelty!'
she wants to be filled with cruelty because she feels that is the only way she'll be heard as a woman
shes been convincing herself to be evil since her child was taken from her she may feel she needs to be punished too as her child was
she feels so drained and like everything she has has been stripped form her so she is trying to refill her body with something to make her feel something other than sadness
she wants to regain control over her own body and feelings
'unsex me here'
she wants to be made more masculine because she is grieving her child so deeply so she wants to be the complete opposite of a woman who can make children
she no longer wants to feel feminine because the only way she feels she can be heard is by making herself more masculine as men have more power
she feels empty and the only way she can fill this void of hurt is by channeling it into something else she feels strongly about- power
'come to my woman’s breasts,
And take my milk for gall'
she wants to rid herself of everything about her body that makes her feminine or links her to childbirth
milk has connotations of purity so she wants to replace that innocence and purity, that comes with childbirth, with evil and poison to make her feel something
gall- to mock
she has no longer got any care towards her maternal feelings or he child she as lost so she does not care what happens to her milk
people could mock her for not being feminine but she wont care because she as the power as future queen
