Formative assessments are the process of gathering student knowledge as they are learning it. Formative assessments should be used to adjust instruction.
Ex 1. Homework
Ex 2. Questioning
A summative assessment at the end of a unit, or chunk of learning.
Ex 1. Final exam
Ex 2. End of unit exam
A performance assessment is when students take the skills or knowledge they have learned and apply it to an authentic problem to create a product.
Ex 1. Portfolio
Ex 2. Creating a song - Students will create a song based on what they learned in the unit.
Benchmarks are used to measure student growth. The school I am working at gives a benchmark at the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and compare those scores to the students' STAAR test scores.
STAAR test
Ex 2. Check For Understanding assessment: I have seen these used in the Frenship district. They give these after each unit or chunk of learning to measure student learning. They use it to adjust instruction.
A diagnostic test is a pre-assessment given to students that usually breaks down each skill and shows teachers how the individual is doing on each domain.
Ex 1. KWL chart - This tells you what the student knows, wants to know, and then what they learned during the lesson.
Ex 2. Sight word list - This is used to help an educator find the reading level of a student. Students read out loud a word list while the teacher marks on their copy how the student performs.
