gets "proof" from talking to Michael about Brandy, but stages it so that Odin thinks Michael is talking about Desi instead

Uses to get to Odin through Desi
convinces to befriend Desi to ask Odin to let him back on team
gives Michael scarf and convinces him to give to Brandy
Hugo manipulating Emily
He has the control in the relationship - he pulls and pushes her away
Hugo has a careless attitude towards her until he found out she took the scarf

Signposts
Tough Question: Hugo asks his Father if he would also bench Odin (his star player) as opposed to Michael if he was the one in the fight (which his father doesn't answer)
Again and Again: The hawk and birds keep showing up throughout the film, especially the hawk. The hawk is the mascot of the school, Hugo steals the hawk, and also says how he wishes to be a hawk (which are known to be aggressive predators and do not get along well with other birds, specifically doves)
Again and Again: Hugo is constantly depicted watching and surveying other people through doorways, windows, etc. Suggesting the idea that he is always in the know and in control of what's going on
C & C: Odin sexually assaults Desi after saying he "would never ever do something like that". He also said if he ever did, he would leave the school.
C & C: Hugo makes Roger get into a fight but then contradicts his actions when he takes Michael's side and stands up for him during the meeting with coach. Part of his manipulation tactics to make him appear innocent in the situation.
Aha Moment: "I saw Michael with that same scarf about an hour ago"
Hugo tells Odin he sees Michael with his family's heirloom (which he gave to Desi) and Odin puts two and two together that she's "cheating" on him
"Are you for real?"
C & C: Odin enters through the doorway in contrast to when he would sneak through the window. This shows that there is a change in Odin's motive and tone for this encounter with Desi where it is more serious and less romantic/playful.
C & C: The father/son relationship that was previously depicted before between Odin and Duke (the coach) experiences a shift; Odin gets angry, storms out, no longer treats him with respect etc.
Again and Again: Duke's angry/aggressive response, tone, attitude, and mannerisms.
i.e. throws eraser at Hugo, pushes stuff off of his desk, throws basketball against the ground, constantly screaming, etc.
Influences Odins actions
Again and Again: Hugo constantly seeking his fathers approval, love, and praise.
"By the way I got an A in English again",
"You haven't invited me to dinner in your office for a while", etc. Humanizes Hugo and introduces a level of sympathy/backstory for his actions.
Tough Question: "What about Desi?" Odin is asking how they should kill the girl he loved (part of him still loves) just because he thought she cheated on him.
Aha Moment: Hugo has an AHA moment when he murders Emily because this is when he realizes that his entire plan has fallen apart and there's no way out. His facial expressions in the movie after the murder show realization, shock, but not remorse.
Symbols
Windows
Spying
When characters spy on each other through the windows it often shows they dont trust the person they are spying on
Odin spys on Michael and Desi: Odin doesnt trust them
Scarf
Odin gave his great grandmothers scarf to Desi. Represents the trust that he has for her
When Desi leaves the scarf on the ground it symbolizes the down fall of her and Odin's relationship
When Hugo puts the scarf over Emily's mouth and face, it symbolizes the idea of say nothing see nothing
The scarf is a key factor in Hugo's attempt to manipulate Odin. He knows the scarf has significant meaning to Odin
Scarf was a key factor in Hugo's plan to frame the murder and suicide of Micheal, to make it more apparent that Desi had been having an affair with Micheal
Birds
Doves (purity, holy spirit and hope)
Hawks (eat doves, domination, higher status)
After the sexual assault, director goes back to the bird scene. This is significant as at the start of the movie, Odin wants to be like a hawk. Since Desi is a virgin, she represents the purity of a dove. On the contrary, Odin represents the hawk because he uses forceful domination
Hugo wants to be a hawk, but he feels like a dove. He try's to ruin Odin to become the hawk that Odin represents
Trees
Represent the branches Hugo has created through manipulation. He represents the trunk, and branches his manipulation through characters such as Odin and Micheal to gain more recognition from his father
School

History
Pillars = History + Wealth
Manipulation
Basketball
Michael, Odin, and Hugo are competing for the recognition of the coach
Odin is better then Hugo at basketball and gets more attention from the coach
Hugo uses steroids to get better at basketball in an attempt to gain more recognition from his father
Macbeth
Manipulation of Hugo
Connects to the idea of a Shakespearean tragedy
Hugo is the master mind of all of the conflict and drama in the movie in order to get what he wants
Motifs
:
Manipulation
Manipulation is how Hugo gets his way through every character. He m
Deception
Desi deceived her father about her and Odin's relationship. Hugo and Roger lied to the Dean about Odin forcing himself on Desi. Odin lied to Desi when she asked him if anyone said anything to him to make him angry.
Racial Prejudice: Odin's only way to attend the school is for his basketball skills, he was the only black kid in the entire school. Hugo used Odin's past and his skin colour as an advantage when he had tried to make it seem like Odin raped Desi. The dean had believed it and the more Hugo lied and used this to his advantage the less Odin was able to control himself.
Reputation: " the only person you have to answer to is yourself"
Hugo is jealous of Odin because of his success in basketball and the way his dad treats him more of a son than him.
Moral/Ethical Decision Making
Hugo manipulating Odin
His decision to manipulate his friends/cause the breakup of Odin and Desi
Motivated from Hugo's need for success and to prove himself. (His monologue at the beginning combined with how his dad treats him as a basketball player and the fact that their family couldn't afford to put him in the school)
Hugo plants the idea of Desi Cheating with Michael in Odin's Head
This is both a way of gaining recognition for himself when Odin loses influence, but also a result of the jealousy caused by his father's fixation on Odin
Hugo's father using similar manipulation tactics acts as the root where Hugo learned how to manipulate, and also gives a reason for Hugo's need for recognition and willingness to cause strive to his friends to get what he wants
Hugo Manipulating Roger and Michael
Occurs on multiple occasions, first with Rogers allegation, and second with the fight between Roger and Michael
Odin's choices to lie and attack Desi
Odin lies to Desi when she asks him about whether he's talked to someone who may be causing his suspicion of her cheating.
This has a few implications. Desi now has reason to think that he has come to be unfairly suspicious of her on his own terms. Odin, trusting Hugo more believes that Desi is responsible for the scarf ending up in Micheal's possession.
Odin assaulting Desi
Shows the extent to which Hugo has manipulated him, and the control Hugo has over him. Odin looks in the mirror and sees Micheal having sex with Desi instead of him which also shows us how far Hugo has forced himself into Odin's head.
Hugo Manipulating Emily
Hugo's relationship with Emily has been suggested to have been strong before. She says that he is acting weird but the only reason she would be staying with him is because of a past affection. His tendency to give and take away affection based on her actions shows how his care for her is outweighed by his goals
He only gives Emily affection when she gets him Odin's scarf. This is a form of manipulation suitable to make someone continue to do things for the manipulator. When they are making out he puts the scarf over her eyes which symbolizes how Emily is left in the dark about Hugo's true motives.
Odin's Downward Spiral
Chooses to take cocaine before and after the dunk contest, and to kill Michael and Desi
Conveys Odin's rationality rather than his morals falling apart as his life does. Hugo has almost the same effect on Odin as drugs do (ie reliant and cause him to make questionable decisions)
Roger's Decision Making
Most of Roger's decision making is tied to what Hugo tells him to do.
Plot
Inciting Incident: Odin receives MVP from Duke (Hugo’s father), Duke says he loves Odin like a son and then Odin only credits Michael making Hugo feel jealous and betrayed
Roger likes Desi and is convinced by Hugo to call her father and accuse Odin of forcing himself onto her
Antecedent action: Odin’s past is revealed; he has had problems with drugs and the police, can only attend the school due to basketball
When confronted, Desi admits she had been in a 4 month long consensual relationship without her father’s knowledge (her ability to keep secrets is established)
Odin then sneaks into Desi’s dorm and gives her his family heirloom and then get naked and lay down together (intimacy, closeness); later revealed that Emily secretly observes this informs Hugo of it
Roger is convinced by Hugo to make Michael mad, Michaels accidentally injures Roger and gets suspended from the basketball team
Hugo advises Michael to get close to Desi to get her to talk to Odin about ending his suspension
Hugo begins to convince Odin that Desi may be cheating on him with Michael prompting suspicion and overthinking upon seeing them together
3 more items...
During practice after speaking to Desi, Odin plays poorly and gets replaced by Michael. He attacks him and storms off.
Hugo speaks to his dad after the attack (they have dinner together in his office) and his dads only concern is knowing what is wrong with Odin. The coach leaves Hugo after he asks the the question.

Jealousy
