VERTIGO - ENDING SCENE
MISE EN SCENE
Mads is trapped in the car with Scottie
Judy is trapped, metaphorically and literally
The tower
Phallic imagery - symbolises an erection, or manly power
Scottie stands tall above the tower at the final shot, suggesting that he's reclaimed his masculinity and is now a based alpha male
Patriarchal order wins (thanks Hays code)
Scottie is bathed in darkness in this scene
Black = secrecy and evil, painting Scottie as a villain
"Good guy" in the light and "bad girl" under darkness
Scottie overcoming his fears and becoming the "hero" against the "villain"
Judy hiding away in the shadows
Trying to hide away in guilt
Contrasted with Scottie's bright light, it's like he's trying to illuminate the secret Judy's hiding
Carlotta's necklace
Resembles the woman in the painting
"To-be-looked-at-ness"
Scottie's tie
Black, white and grey - the colours of life and death
Also the colours of Mad's clothes that she wore throughout the film
Life and death is held in the balance of Scottie
Funeral attire
Foreshadowing that somebody's going to die tonight
Negative space focuses on Scottie and Mads
Dehumanising them both
CINNAMONTOGRAPHY
Anxiously long takes that rarely cut
Builds suspense
The fact that the scene doesn't jump forward in time makes the audience feel every second
POV shots from Mads
Watching people from their perspective without them knowing
Voyeurism
Blue tint throughout the scene
Blue = Scottie's colour
Shows his control of the world and Judy
High angle shot of the tower
Makes it seem large and imposing, hard for Scottie to get his masculinity back
The vertigo effect
To simulate how high the view appears from Scottie's perspective
The idea came from when Hitchcock was seriously drunk, and the rest of the world felt really far away in his POV
The fact that Scottie shakes it off instead of being stunned by it shows that Scottie is reclaiming his bravery and masculinity
The stairs resemble a spiral, the main leitmotif of the film, about the downward spiral of obsession
Scottie slowly creeping towards Judy and the camera
Based alpha male showing dominance over the cringe beta female
A shadowy figure appears, scaring Mads off the tower
It's actually a nun
The innocent viewer (you) finally revealing itself, shocking Mads
Mads being scared of her sins and of punishment
Hays code enforcing that the moral high ground always win
SOUND / MUSIC
Music is intense and foreboding throughout this scene
Paints Scottie as a villain
The music gets higher the more they go up the tower
Shows the height getting taller and the anxiety getting larger
A flourish of noise at the vertigo effect
Like a large scream of shock and terror
Madeline's leitmotif frantically plays when she tries to explain the truth
Trying to regain their love as soon as possible
The music is similar to the time that he first saw Mads, like everything that's set up is coming full circle
