Nervous System
The nervous systems of humans can be divided into two parts: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
One of the most important functions of the PNS is to transmit information about the environment to our brains. Special cells within our eyes, ears, nose, and mouth convert information about our environment into electrical signals that travel through the neurons of the PNS to the CNS.
There are cells throughout our body that have this job of converting what biologists call a stimulus into the electrical signal used by neurons and the brain.
The central nervous system, or CNS, is our brain and our spinal cord.
The peripheral nervous system, or PNS, is made from nerves that link to the central nervous system.
The CNS is like the CPU and wires within a computer, and PNS are cables that connect the computer to your mouse, printer, and monitor. These cables are called nerves, or neurons.
A stimulus can be a touch, the molecules in food that give it a certain taste, or sound waves. A stimulus can also come from within our body.
Neurons are connected to all of our organs and tissues so that the brain can receive information from all of them.
